Description

This asynchronous, fully online course will provide the participants with the basic principles of remote sensing of vegetation as well as the application of those principles to monitoring vegetation using publicly available data sources including European Space Agency (ESA) and United States Geological Survey (USGS). Specific emphasis will be placed on the use of RGB images and multispectral images collected by satellites, airplanes, and drones for mapping and monitoring crop health. We will be using open source and freely available software tools in this course. Participants enrolled in this course are expected to have prior knowledge of GIS and basic GIS skills. Satisfactory completion of all components of this course are required to receive the certificate of completion.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply remote sensing principles to vegetation studies.
  2. Download and analyze multispectral satellite data from USGS or ESA.
  3. Create crop health map and identify spatial variability in crop growth patterns.
  4. Interpret map results and make sense of the trends in data.

Course requirements:

  1. Basic GIS knowledge – can be acquired by completing freely available self-paced DVAC course from ADDA
  2. QGIS software which can be downloaded here.
